Candidates marked with the ABC of Michigan endorsement star have been formally endorsed by the state association for their demonstrated support of open competition, the merit shop philosophy, and workforce development. Candidates without the mark are included for informational purposes only — inclusion in this guide is not an endorsement.

Constitutional Convention
Automatic Ballot Question · Every 16 Years

Michigan's constitution requires voters to be asked every 16 years whether to hold a convention to revise the state constitution. If approved, 148 delegates would be elected to propose changes, which voters would then approve or reject at a future election.

A YES vote means…
Michigan will hold a constitutional convention in 2027. Voters will elect 148 delegates (three from each state Senate district, plus three at-large) who will meet to propose revisions to — or a full rewrite of — the Michigan Constitution. Any changes the convention proposes would then go back to voters for final approval or rejection.
A NO vote means…
No convention will be held. The current Michigan Constitution stays in effect as written, and any future changes would continue to happen the existing way — through legislatively referred amendments, citizen-initiated amendments, or the next automatic convention question in 2042.

Money Out of Politics — "MOP" Up Michigan
Citizen Initiative · Campaign Finance

The Money Out of Politics proposal would make major changes to Michigan campaign finance law.

If approved, the proposal would:
  • Limit political contributions by certain government contractors, utilities, and related organizations;
  • Expand reporting and disclosure requirements for organizations involved in public policy advocacy;
  • Require additional reporting of political spending and some donor information; and
  • Broaden the types of public communications that could be regulated under campaign finance law.
How Could This Impact ABC Members?

The proposal would affect construction companies and other businesses that receive more than $250,000 per year in government contracts, including some subcontractors performing work on public projects.

Who Could Be Affected?
  • The company itself;
  • Certain owners and principals;
  • Board members;
  • Senior officers and executives;
  • Agents, including lobbyists;
  • Immediate family members of certain covered individuals; and
  • Affiliated organizations and entities.
What Could This Mean for Construction Companies?
  • Limit the ability of some contractors to contribute to candidates or political committees;
  • Restrict political activity by owners, board members, executives, and certain agents;
  • Apply to subcontractors performing work on public projects if they exceed the government's contract thresholds;
  • Create penalties that could affect a company's eligibility for government contracts if violations occur; and
  • Make advocacy and public policy communications more complicated, especially when discussing candidates, elected officials, or ballot proposals.
ABC's Position

ABC believes these changes would create significant new restrictions, compliance requirements, and legal risks for many merit shop contractors and businesses that perform public work in Michigan.

Americans for Citizen Voting — Michigan (MICOV)
Citizen Initiative · Constitutional Amendment

Would amend the Michigan Constitution to require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register and vote, require photo ID (or driver's license / partial Social Security number) to vote absentee, eliminate the affidavit alternative for voters without photo ID, and create a state-funded hardship program to help voters obtain required documents.

A YES vote means…
Michigan's Constitution would be amended to require citizenship verification for all voters (through a statewide program, document submission, or provisional voting), require removal of noncitizens from the rolls after notice and a 45-day rebuttal period, require photo ID to vote in person and absentee, and — beginning 11/2/2027 — prohibit counting ballots from voters whose citizenship is unverified unless documents are shown within 6 days after the election. Violators would face up to a $1,000 fine and/or up to 5 years in prison.
A NO vote means…
Michigan's current voter registration and ID rules stay in place. Citizenship would continue to be attested under existing law, the photo-ID affidavit alternative would remain available, and absentee voting would continue under current identification requirements.
